Persuasion Summary

Before the movie starts young Anne Elliot, beautiful, with an "elegance of mind and sweetness of temper", was engaged to be married to Captain Wentworth, poor but with prospects. Anne is persuaded by her good friend Lady Russel to break off her engagment, thinking it is the best for both herself and the man she loves.

Nine years later, their situations are reversed. Anne's father has become much in debt, and is eventually required to rent out his house to Captain and Mrs. Croft. Anne's father and older sister, Elizabeth, then go to live at Bath, accompanied by Elizabeth's poor friend, Mrs. Clay. Anne is left to stay with her married younger sister, Mary, who lives in a cottage at Uppercross.
