Leigh, meanwhile, encouraged Trojan to develop his artistic skills. Trojan had first thought of becoming a painter when they had visited John Maybury´s exhibition at the B2 gallery in 1982. Leigh had told Trojan that he could easily paint pictures as good as John´s, and this led to Trojan producing a series of paintings to decorate the flat. He used rough materials that he found in the road as canvases, maybe a heardboard or a wooden pallet. He painted bright portraits, glueing on various objects such as false nails, radios and even a fake fifty pound note. They were naive but also powerful and in 1996 his talent was finally recognized with a posthumous exhibition of his work at the Manchester Metropolitan Gallery Sue Tilley back to TROJAN menu click to enlarge |
