Manipulative Design & Clever Layout of AV systems

Audio-visual layout

After 1997, public buses in Hong Kong have been refitted with audio-visual (AV) broadcasting systems, two on each deck, to allow bus operators to show advertisements to riders during their bus trips.

Due to the clever design and layout of the AV systems, riders have no option but are forced to watch and to listen to these adverts:

By Design and by Contract

1. By contract with advertisers, bus operators are obliged to provide an AV system such that bus riders cannot escape from the bombardment of advertising activities

2. In reality, bus riders are closely surrounded by no fewer than 4 speakers once seated.

3. Nature of advertising is intrusive, therefore, riders cannot escape the impact of these activities.

According to advertising professional, "Advertisements are designed to be attention getting.. sometimes have to be intrusive ..."

Small space inside bus compartment

No quiet zone set up in minibuses.

On-off switches does not serve the purpose of providing choices to riders

Token gestures

1. Useless quiet zone
Nearby speakers still send out audio signal high enough to reach riders seated in the quiet zone.

2. Not enough quiet zone

3. Bus operators unilaterally modified the contract with riders

4. They may not want to have a quiet zone. Bus operators know value of their shows lies in the fact that "People sitting in a bus or subway car are a captive audience". If passengers could opt out of the forced advertisements, bus operators might have to charge a lower rate for advertisements.

NO option to refuse the reception of advertisements on buses, see crowded buses afford no options.

Conclusion: In Hong Kong, bus riders, young and old, male or female are forced to watch and to listen to bus spam.
