Bus companies tearing apart Hong Kong's Bill of Rights:
- "No one shall be held in slavery ... "
- "No one shall be held in servitude."
Slavery - A state of subjection or subservient to a specified person
or influence; a state of lacking of personal freedom, as to act as one
chooses.
Bondage - A state of subjection to a force,
a power, or an influence; being bound to the service of another
with virtually no hope of freedom.
|
Servitude - The state of a person who is subjected, voluntarily or otherwise,
to another person as his servant.
For instance, bus riders are bound to the service of watching AV broadcast
put in front of them without any hope of declining them because they are
physically prohibited (other than getting off the buses) from moving away
from the reach of the broadcast. This is due either to the following:
- crowded conditions, the bus is full and you could not move at all,
or
- non-existence of quiet zone (such as on
the upper deck of buses and on minibuses) or
- even if quiet zone does exists, the zone
is too small to entertain all those who desire a seat in the quiet zone
- and even if you could find a seat in the quiet zone, you are still
bonded to listening to the ads because the quiet
zone is leaky, i.e., broadcast from speakers from outside of the
small quiet zone could still reach you
- unlawful quiet zone - riders' refusal to
comply with a condition of the tri--lateral agreement among riders,
bus operators and the Hong Kong Government on grounds that this condition
is unlawful or unethical.

"A prisoner who enjoys being in prison does not make the the
prison go away.
Likewise, a slave who doesn't mind being enslaved does not make
slavery disappear. It stays so long as the master still exercises
its domination over its subjects."
"To endure slavery in silence
does not mean consent." |
